NIZAMABAD: After a long spell, Maoist posters calling for the boycott of panchayat elections appeared in villages falling under Darpalli mandal on Sunday.

Posters in the name of CPI (Maoist) Nizamabad division secretary, Jagan, appeared at Nallavelli, Gouraram, and Donkal villages, prompting the police to increase vigil. The Maoist leader threatened surrendered Naxalites and political leaders with severe consequences if they failed to mend their attitude. Common people have been harassed by former Maoists and leaders who joined with the police, he alleged.tnn Villagers, who found the posters at important centres in the villages in the morning, informed the cops, who later removed them.

Dichpalli circle inspector Srisailam, however, refuted the existence of Naxalites in the area and suspected it to be the handiwork of local youths. “We will catch the culprits soon,” he added.

Darpalli and its surrounding villages were once dominated by Maoists but their influence started waning after the Manala encounter in 2005 in which 10 Maoists, including district committee secretary Ramesh, died.

Nizamabad sub-divisional police officer Anil, who visited the villages, said there would be no hurdle for the panchayat elections. Some Maoist sympathizers have already been bound over, he said.
