Maoist bandh hits Malkangiri

KORAPUT: Transport services came to a standstill on the first day of the two-day CPI (Maoist) bandh in Malkangiri district on Friday. The Malkangiri Divisional Committee (MDC), a rebel body, called the 48-hour strike in protest against anti-Maoist operations in the district and alleged police atrocities against tribals.

While no vehicle ventured into the district fearing Maoist attack, intra-district transportation was also paralyzed. Though shops and markets remained open in urban areas, the rural parts wore a deserted look with markets remaining closed throughout the day. “We can’t take a risk by plying vehicles during the bandh. The rebels may have planted landmines and it is also not sensible to defy the Maoist diktat here,” said a private bus owner in Malkangiri.

Passengers had a harrowing time across the district. Some commuters were forced to travel in small vehicles by paying 4 to 5 times the actual fare.

Vehicular movement was also paralyzed at Boipariguda and Lamataput blocks in Koraput district.
